Sync and Publish are optional paid add-ons. There are thousands of community plugins, Canvas, and Bases for property-driven views. Sync has published third-party security audits. An official CLI aimed at agentic tools landed in early 2026.

If your job is writing (thinking on the page, developing an argument across months, building a personal network of ideas you author yourself) Obsidian is arguably the best tool that has ever existed for it. Nothing below changes that.

But most knowledge work is not writing. Most knowledge work is answering. On that job, three taxes keep showing up.

The linking tax. Every edge in that constellation is a manual wiki-style link you typed when you remembered the other note existed. Obsidian has no idea that your vendor contract note and your security review note are about the same risk unless you told it. The graph is not a picture of your knowledge. It is a picture of your discipline, and discipline collapses in the weeks you need the vault most. Skip two weeks of linking and nothing warns you. Clusters look complete when they are not.

The authorship tax. Notes are things you wrote. The material that actually governs the work is often material you did not write and will never summarize into notes: regulatory filings, MSAs, call transcripts, board decks, competitor screenshots, multi-quarter spreadsheets. You can drag a PDF into a vault. It sits as an attachment. Its contents are not meaningfully in your graph. Say it plainly: your vault knows your notes about your work. It does not know your work. When the answer lives in that pile and search still fails, that is the answer exists, I just can’t find it.

The plugin tax.

Obsidian ships no AI inside the app by deliberate design. Community plugins (local embeddings, BYO keys, hosted tiers) are real and sometimes excellent. You still own the stack: which plugin, which model, local or hosted, index maintenance, and what breaks on the next core release. Embedding indexes degrade on very large vaults. And because Obsidian’s own docs state that vault search covers notes and canvases, not PDF text, plugin AI often reasons over the smaller half of your material.

The CLI is genuinely good, and it is the strongest counterargument. What it hands an agent is text search over notes: keyword and regex, not PDF contents, not meaning-first retrieval, and not a graph the software built. An excellent grep over notes you authored is still a grep.

More folders will not fix it. New tags, Maps of Content, and cleaner Bases views feel productive for a weekend. They fail for a structural reason: the questions arrive unlabeled. You cannot pre-tag for a pricing, compliance, or “didn’t we already rule that out?” question that nobody has asked yet. Filing systems solve storage. You have a reachability problem under time pressure.

Head to Head (Without the Marketing Sweep)

Obsidian still wins on offline local privacy by architecture, zero lock-in (plain Markdown), a free core, long-form composition and Canvas, and unmatched extensibility. If your primary job is composing your own thinking on your own disk, stay in Obsidian. That is a good decision.

Switch pressure rises when most of these are true: more documents given than notes written; questions that start with why did we or what did they say; citations you can put in front of someone else; vault reorganizations more than twice this year; “I’ll just search for it” attempts over ten minutes; the same files re-uploaded to a chat tool more than five times.

It mainly knows what you typed and linked. PDF attachments often sit outside search, backlinks, and the graph, so the vault knows your notes about the work, not the work itself.
